Uffizi
We spent Thursday at the Uffizi, which does not allow photos, so no pictures for you. We both wished we had taken the elevator up to the tour start--the equivalent of the sixth floor. (40 steps to the floor Mary says.) Even the tour guide was huffing and puffing. We stayed for a while after the tour, which only hit the highlights. Did see a Tintoretto (Man with the Red Hair) that reminded me of the way my nephew Kevin looked the last time I saw him.

Fontana park along the Arno
Friday the heat finally broke so it was quite pleasant. We walked to the Porte Vecchio to begin our walking tour. Our guide was Constanza, who was so delightful. (Mary thinks Donna Jo's opinion was influenced by the free gelatto stop. OK, OK so I tipped her too.)

Ponte Vecchio
We had noticed, even in Rome, a number of padlocks fastened in odd places. Constanza explained that several years ago there was an Italian film out about 2 lovers who padlock the thing shut and then throw the key in the river--True love forever for teens.

David (copy) & Hercules on Left in front of city hall
Saw the imitation David in the square and then on to see the real thing. Like the difference between butter and Margarine. Another day soaked in art--more sculpture today. There was some question about whether we would be able to get into the Academe to see David because the city workers have been on strike. They've had to put in overtime with no pay since January. But there was no problem for us.

Our guide in Rome told us that there are workers going around taking those locks off in Rome because they drag down the chains. At least it's not hearts & initials (or worse) carved into the stone.
