Taking it easy

July 8 First of two straight days at sea

We are doing really strenuous things today--trying to find an empty lounge chair on the pool deck so we can sit and watch the ship's wake, exchanging books at the library, picking up our passports prior to leaving the ship. You know, exhausting things that require liberal applications of fresh lemonade and ice cream.

We have had our third formal dining night so we donned our party clothes and trotted off. Sat at a table with an extended family from Linoln, NE who knew my brother. The two kids were all dressed up--boy about 11 in his tux and girl about 10 in her pretty party clothes. They were very well-behaved and it was a pleasure to dine with them. We've met some really interesting people on this trip from all over.

We have been entertained every other evening with little folded towel animals made by our cabin staff. The last one was of an indeterminate species. Mary says it's a rabbit, but I have my doubts. I picked up Jan's camera to take its picture, but the flash refused to go off no matter how many times I clicked the shutter. Turns out Jan had set her camera to the "smile" feature and the idiot beast refused to bare its teeth.

We ended the evening at the frequent cruiser party on Mary's invite.   The event included music and dancing to a quartet that played stuff from New York, New York to Rock Around the Clock. Captain Per and the other big guns from the ship were there to honor two couples who each logged 30 cruises with the line. Lots of little tidbits to eat. Jan couldn't get the swordfish ice sculpture to smile either.

I forgot to mention yesterday about the merchant at the Grand Bazaar who called to me as I passed: "Hey, California Lady. Are you from California?" I glanced at him from the corner of my eye as I moved on, saying: "Not even close." He took a step to continue our conversation. "Oshkosh?" he asked, hopefully. I just shook my head.
