Roman Holiday

Our poor little feet are about worn to nubbins.  We have walked and walked all morning visiting fountains, Roman ruins, churches, churches built on Roman ruins.  We threw our coins in Trevi Fountain so we would be sure to come back to Roman.

We visited the Spanish Steps this morning, which is good, as Jan is to meet her friend Vicky there tomorrow morning, like everyone else in Rome.  The Keats/Shelley Museum next to it was closed, so we ambled across the street and down Via Condotti, which is the most expensive shopping street in Rome--Jimmy Choo, Dior, Armani, etc.  Many of the shops there had doormen--presumably to keep out peons like us.

We lunched cheap--Jan went to a nearby grocery store and bought Etruscan pears, nectarines, good bread and yogurt.  Highly satisfactory.  (Supper included green salad, spaghetti carbonata, and four cheese pizza--complete with entertainment on the Novano square.)

In the afternoon we visited the Catacombs of Donitella.  It wasn't as creepy as I was afraid it would be--no bones--but they only took us down one level.  It was sure dark and dank, though, and I was glad I had a long-sleeved shirt to put on.  We had an opportunity to celebrate communion later in one of the niches used for that purpose centuries ago.  The two priests in our group came prepared.  Very moving.
