We had a free morning, so Jan went off to meet her friend Vicky at the Spanish Steps, while Mary and I wandered over to people watch at the Piazza Novona. The sun came up over the buildings on the east side and gradually crept down over the stone facades of the west side of the square, lighting up the yellow, ochre, and pale grey marble with a glow the makes you itch to be able to point. I'm not sure photos will do it justice.
Jan and Vicky joined us for a lunch of very good pizza and salads. Then on to the Vatican museums where our guide was Guiseppi, who also teaches art history at University of Florence. An afternoon is not nearly enough time here. We went racing through Egyptian, Greek and Roman history so we could make the Sistine Chapel before it closed. Even filled with a ton o'tourists, that was totally amazing.
Then we were on our own to see the inside of St. Peter's. The Pieta was beautiful, even though you can't get close to it now. Then Mary got a great shot down the length of the church.
